STEP 1: Know What’s Actually Tested (Most Students Waste Time Studying the Wrong Stuff)

The truth? Algebra 1 finals are shockingly predictable.

Every test—no matter the school—pulls from the same core concepts:

Must-Know Topics for Algebra 1 Finals

  1. Linear equations (slope, graphs, intercepts)

  2. Exponents & exponent rules

  3. Factoring (trinomials, GCF, difference of squares)

  4. Quadratic equations & graphs

  5. Functions & function notation

  6. Sequences (arithmetic + geometric)

  7. Inequalities (solving & graphing)

  8. Radical expressions

  9. Transformations of graphs

This cheat sheet covers ALL of them so you can focus only on the content that will actually be tested.

STEP 2: Do a 10-Minute “Weak Spot Check”

Before studying, do this:

  1. Look through the cheat sheet.

  2. Circle every topic that looks unfamiliar, confusing, or you forgot.

  3. Rank them 1–3:

    • 1 = I know this

    • 2 = I kind of remember this

    • 3 = I definitely need help here

Study only the 3’s first.

This cuts your study time by 60–80%.

Most students waste hours reviewing things they already understand.

You won’t.

STEP 3: Use the “3–2–1 Method” (Teacher-Developed, Works for Every Student)

This is the fastest and most effective way to study for Algebra 1:

3 – Review 3 Examples

Use your cheat sheet to look at 3 problems of the topic.

2 – Do 2 Problems on Your Own

Practice without notes.

1 – Check 1 Problem You Got Wrong

Fix all mistakes immediately.

Repeat this for each topic you ranked as a “3.”

This method cuts through confusion faster than anything else.

STEP 4: Memorize Only the NON-NEGOTIABLE Formulas

Not every formula needs memorizing.

But these must be automatic:

  • Slope formula

  • Slope-intercept form

  • Point-slope form

  • Distance formula

  • Midpoint formula

  • Quadratic formula

  • Exponent rules

  • Factoring patterns:

    • GCF

    • Difference of squares

    • Sum/product for trinomials

Your cheat sheet highlights these so you don’t have to guess.

STEP 5: Practice the Exact Way the Final Exam Is Written

Algebra 1 tests use the same styles of questions every year:

You will NEED to be able to:

  • Identify slope from a graph

  • Identify slope from a table

  • Plug into y = mx + b

  • Solve a system using substitution or elimination

  • Factor quickly

  • Complete the square (sometimes)

  • Use the quadratic formula

  • Read function notation

  • Identify sequence formulas

  • Work with transformations of graphs

If you can do all of those, you will pass your final.

If you can do them fast, you will get an A.

STEP 6: Use the Cheat Sheet as a Daily “Warm-Up”

Day 1:

Linear equations + slope

Day 2:

Graphing

Day 3:

Exponents + polynomials

Day 4:

Factoring (all types)

Day 5:

Quadratic equations + graphs

Day 6:

Functions + sequences

Day 7:

Full cheat sheet review + practice test

Tell students:

“If you can explain the cheat sheet without looking at it, you’re ready.”

STEP 7: Avoid Common Final Exam Mistakes

These errors cost students the most points:

❌ Forgetting negative signs

❌ Mixing up slope formulas

❌ Not distributing negatives

❌ Factoring incorrectly

❌ Not checking solutions

❌ Solving the wrong variable

❌ Plugging into formulas wrong

❌ Forgetting to write both solutions for quadratics

❌ Reading graphs incorrectly

Your cheat sheet keeps these mistakes in front of students so they don’t slip up on test day.

STEP 8: Final Exam Day Checklist (Do NOT Skip This)

✔ Bring a calculator

✔ Bring scratch paper

✔ Re-read the question slowly

✔ Highlight or underline important numbers

✔ Plug answer back in to check

✔ Move on quickly if you get stuck

✔ Circle any “might be wrong” answers

✔ Use remaining time to check your circled ones

Students who check their work raise scores 10–15 points instantly.
